Why Arrowtown Homeowners Are Installing Air-to-Water Heat Pumps

Winters in Arrowtown are freezing cold, quiet and typically below zero at night. Properties around Buckingham St, Millbrook Resort and the Arrow River face a steep temperature slide as soon as the sun dips behind the hills. Frost settles early. Interiors cool quickly. Many properties, from heritage cottages to modern builds in Lake Hayes Estate, were never intended for stable, whole-home hydronic heating.

We regularly assess homes with:

Living rooms that feel toasty, but bedrooms still get chilly

Systems running constantly without stabilising the indoor temperature

Rising winter electricity bills

Boilers cycling frequently, with no improvement in comfort

Highlander Heating system designs focus on proper heat-loss surveys, accurate sizing, and detailed commissioning so your air-to-water heat pump installation in Arrowtown performs reliably all winter.

How Air-to-Water Heat Pumps Maintain Comfort in Arrowtown

Air-to-water heat pumps extract heat from the outside air and transfer it into a fluid that powers radiators or underfloor heating.

Instead of short sprints of high heat, the system provides constant, low-temperature warmth throughout the house. In Arrowtown’s long alpine winters, that constant background heat is a game-changer.

A correctly sized heat pump system installation in Arrowtown can ensure even temperatures in all rooms, reduce reliance on diesel or gas boilers, operate effectively even in the Otago cold, and lower overall running costs compared to older-generation systems.

We configure each air-to-water heat pump system to suit the property: insulation levels, glazing options and orientation towards the Crown Range, to name a few.

We designed and built our home in Dunedin in 20011. Coming from the UK we wanted full central heating with a radiator in every room but were wanting to install an “eco-friendly” system. We chose an imported European system with solar-heated stored water and a back-up hopper-fed pellet boiler and an “intelligent” controller. Unfortunately, after five years we looked for an alternative boiler because the pellet boiler was causing us problems: • wastage of pellets in the burn-down sequence due to the controller constantly calling for heat for a just few minutes and then not, typical of the Dunedin climate, but not cost effective. • buildup of tar in the burner box and flues due to resin in the pine pellets needing a weekly shut down and cleaning, not fun in the winter months. We decided we needed an alternative boiler. On recommendation we called on Neil Riddoch at Highlander Heating. Neil installed a Grant diesel oil boiler, oil storage tank, and replacement inner flue. I handled the DCC planning stuff, designed and built an interface between the Grant boiler and the “intelligent” controller, and helped with installing the oil storage tank. The whole process went smoothly, I enjoyed working with Neil who is a professional, knowledgeable, and experienced heating engineer. We now have a reliable and trouble-free central heating system supported by an annual inspection and service from Highlander Heating.

Understanding Air-to-Water Heat Pump Technology

These systems capture renewable heat from outdoor air and transfer it into water used to heat the home. They operate efficiently because they move heat rather than generate it directly. Modern systems can deliver 3-4 units of heat per unit of electricity used.

They are well matched to Arrowtown because they provide:

Reliable cold-climate performance

Even heating with no hot or cold spots

Compatible with radiators and underfloor systems

Quiet operation in residential areas

Correct sizing ensures your Arrowtown heat pump system continues to perform throughout frosty mornings and long winter cold snaps.

With accurate heat-loss calculations, precise system sizing, and complete commissioning, they provide warm, even heating throughout winter, including on frosty mornings and during prolonged alpine cold snaps.

Costs depend on your home’s size, levels of insulation, heat-loss needs and whether radiators or underfloor heating are involved. All of our bespoke systems are designed with your property in mind, eliminating the risk of being under- or over-sized, which means long-term efficiency, optimum running costs and reliability.

Yes. When properly designed, air-to-water heat pumps can displace diesel- or gas-fired boilers for whole-home heating. When properly sized and commissioned, it helps create even room-to-room comfort, reduces reliance on fuel, and improves overall system efficiency.

Do you do full system design and commissioning?

Yes. We handle the entire process, including detailed heat-loss calculations, system design, installation, hydraulic balancing, control configuration and final commissioning. It helps ensure the system does its job well, stays quiet, and maintains functionality that lasts from day one.

How long does installation take?

These types of air-to-water heat pump installations typically take one to three days. How long this takes will depend on the size of your system, where it’s placed, and whether you need to upgrade a hot water cylinder, as well as on integration with radiators or underfloor heating.
